new discovery.

Ben got a hot tip that turns out genius.

Amtrak Package Express will ship a bike up to 100 lbs anywhere in the US for $49 one way, and will store it up to 48 hours at its destination for free. Also, they will insure it (which airlines won't) for $.50 per $100 of value up to $2000 or $.75 per $100 value between $2000 and $10,000.

Score.

oh yeah, I forgot to mention that when it got harder to take bikes on planes after 9/11, I would ship my bike in a Trico Ironcase using FedEx ground and it was reasonable. I don't remember rates, it's been a few years since I have done it. But you do need someone (or a shop) on the other end to accept it and store it. It might be in the same price range as Amtrak, it's worth checking.
