help the sport. be an official.

The Illinois Cycling Association is very, very short on officials, forcing some events to run short-handed (and give poor results) and others to pay big bucks to bring officials in from out of state (a cost that's passed on in registration fees, making you pay more to race.) Why not give back to the sport by getting your license and officiating a few track, road, or CX races in 2009? Hell, you even get paid... a little.

Anyone got some good herbal tea I could borrow? My cold is getting worse, the weather for this weekend is cyclocross perfect but sick girl miserable, and I wouldn't mind being un-miserable for, ya know, a spell.

and ya wanna know what's cool? the high school 2 blocks from our house that I run past every morning has a new sign up: Congratulations Michelle Obama, Class of 1981 Alumna.

Hey Julie, what's the requirement for number of events to keep certified, and continuing ed? I've thought about this before, but my weekends are pretty booked next year!

the requirement is just that you renew your license. no re-testing or classes to take. they send you the new rulebook each year when you update your license. you could get your license and work one race a year, no problem...

it's a bummer there isn't another class...the saturday after thanksgiving is a no go for me. Let me know if there are more, I'd be interested in signing up.

maybe the WCA has a similar clinic?

I have considered doing the official thing many times but I always figured I race too much to be doing that, too ... unfortunately I want to head to jingle cross after I get back from Thanksgiving.

for the cold, possible things to try:
neti pot with neti pot salt
Umcka cold care
First Defense by Life Rising (Chinese herbal medicine)
Counter Attack Immuno-Response (don't have much experience with this one)

Sprinkle some cayenne pepper in your tea. Lemon might be good, too.

If I want to kill a cold, I dip a clove of garlic in honey (to help it go down better) and then chew it up and swallow it. Yes. Chew it.

Go to the store and get some blueberries (frozen is fine), a couple of lemons (organic if you can swing it), straight-up grape juice (no sugar added; the pure stuff if you can find it). When you get home slice the lemon into thirds, and peel the yellow off one of the thirds, keeping as much of the white rind as possible. Cut it into smaller chunks (rind and seeds included), toss 'em into a blender with a handful of the blueberries and maybe a half cup of the grape juice. You can add a bit of water if need be. Drink that several times a day, with at least 1000 mg of vitamin C.

I kid you not: this is the elixir of the gods. One of the doctors at my yoga training shared it with us so we could keep from catching colds, and I now swear by it. It works best at the first sign of the cold, but I bet it couldn't hurt. I share this with my students and they all sing its praises as well.

Get well soon!
