I have trouble believing that people are still reading this. I haven't had anything upbeat or useful or positive to say in quite a few weeks. I will try to turn that around... but not just yet.
First, I'm officially off the marathon training beat. This weekend I once again ran 10, and it went fine, but it wasn't the 15 on the plan. I don't see any way to catch up at this point. Big Sur, I wish I knew ya... but there's always next year. In the mean time, I could run a half tomorrow if I wanted to, and I do plan on still running the Cary March Madness half on March 20 with heart.
(It's easy to be all, "I hate myself for failing to complete my training plan." It's also easy to think, "How many Americans even run a mile? The fact that I'm still on track for a half is nothing to sneeze at." Finding a nice medium between the two, I'm sticking with, "mmmm, I like mango.")
In the meantime, in the true spirit of American consumerism, I made myself feel better this weekend by selling the Kona and picking up Rachael's old cross check. OMG I have a cx bike! There go all my "It's the MTB's fault" excuses. I might have to, erm, "race." It's actually the first time I've ridden a SRAM road group and retuning my head is taking a minute, but I'm in LOVE with the DT Swiss wheelset, and with new bars, a shorter stem, and a Julie-friendly saddle, I think it would be pret a aller.
Audrey's fundraiser last night went swimmingly, with more than 50 people raising more than $2000. It's just fantastic to see folks coming together for her-- even folks who don't know her. The bike community in Chi is full of a lot of great, stand-up folks. I'm so thankful to know some of 'em.

It's pretty early in the season for a marathon! Cross Checks weigh a ton, so you still have an excuse. ;-)
Helping your Friend Audrey was perhaps the most positive thing you've blogged about. Now go enjoy your athletics, running and cycling.
Tom's aunt is a sponsor for a 5k in Palos Heights the day before Easter. Want a free entry? It'll be my first running race and it should be amusing to see. = )
March Madness half is on the 21st, not the 20th. If you're running 10 now and doing a half on the 21st, you can do Big Sur - just keep it up!
See you in Carey.
Bill (brevets)
Woah, Brevet Bill? With the Berthaud bags? How are you???
Yup. Doing OK. Trying to get ready for Cary, some brevets, RTR. Big Sur was my daughter's first marathon a couple of years ago.
You still riding brevets? I'll admit, I haven't. Schedule just doesn't line up well for me lately, it seems.
admittedly, I know nothing about marathons... but why not try to get back on your training schedule and do your best at Big Sur? It'll be a nice trip, too.
being where you can vs. need to be is tough.. I'm not recommending necessarily just going ahead and doing the marathon. on the other hand, I have to say it can be done. I have hard data with the sample size of 1. It might hurt. It might hurt more than is worth it.
make a decision, but it doesn't have to be a failure. it can just be a smart season sustaining decision.
Giving things up is hard, but sometimes it is the smartest decision you can make, and can really feel like a gift to yourself. Big Sur would have been awesome, but ya know what? You have a lot more marathons in you. It is not a failure, just a choice to concentrate on and enjoy other things this spring!
hey girl!! so happy audrey got such great support!
and a CX bike? one day we will race CX together at harbin park! HOLLA!
I've had to bail on my last 2 marathon attempts. Your not alone... GET ON YOUR BIKE AND RIDE :)
