two down, two to go.

i stood in front of our staging location and noticed something about the traffic eastbound on Capitol Drive - they had cross bikes. I pulled out my gizmo and googled the WI CX schedule and, sure enough, I spent half the day standing less than 2 mi from the race. Huh. In one of the only breaks of the day a coworker and I rolled over to see if we could say hi to folks I haven't seen in a while- maybe Jeremy or Kyle or someone- but they all raced later. Meh.

More than 450 volunteers rolled through our site yesterday, about half from Illinois. After most of the noon volunteers were already out, woman came in solo and I jumped on the opportunity to be her buddy. I knocked probably more than 60 doors with her and didn't find a single McCain voter. Things look good. Honestly, though, being ahead isn't all that beneficial when first-time voters need the motivation of a fight. Our rap now includes, "there will be long lines, bring something to do. I hope you agree that waiting in line is worth it to get our country out of this mess."

On the way home from work last night NPR had a piece about a new Hunter S. biography. I got home, drank heavily, and watched "Where the Buffalo Roam." Hunter S. rocks my socks off.

I actually talked to McCain voters for the first time! Today! I have to admit, it felt good making it to Election Day eve before encountering any McCain voters. We had one McCain voter down as a registered Dem, and he was pretty short with me. Not rude; just clipped and brusque. I thanked him for voting and moved on. I so wanted to ask him why he'd vote against the party in this particular election.

I also talked with one voter's mom. Apparently she was away at college. "Oh, don't you worry! She's already voted for Obama! And we're voting for McCain! Can you imagine that?" She had a great sense of humor and was super kind to me. So far no one's been rude at all.

I can only imagine how you must be feeling. I am so damned exhausted, and I'm just working out of this little office. Also: every time I read "GOTV" i think "Go TV!" like television. Still. It always takes me a minute to realize it's an anagram.
