(photo: Luke) So, Saturday morning with Audrey's help Ben and I loaded up the car with baby and all the accoutrement for a weekend at Indian Lakes. Ben goes to grab the bikes and says "one bike, then?" I say no, mine too. He says it's not there. Huh. I spent the next several minutes trying to remember who I loaned it out to. And I couldn't remember loaning it out. Then Ben said the lock was missing too, and I knew. The Spot was gone. I've been searching craigslist & ebay, putting posters at local shops, filing police report, etc. It's insured, that's the good news. But I loved that bike. It was so perfect.
Anyway, after that experience, plus a slight hangover from Half Acre's latest, and the jitters from too much espresso, I showed up at registration, pedals in hand, signed up to race and asked if anyone had a bike. Michael from West Town had a loaner, so I was in business. I did my first mount and dismount of the year and lined up. Didn't even adjust the saddle. From the whistle it was clear that after 10 months of not pushing myself- no tempo, no vo2, no intervals- i just couldn't. The field was gone before the first hill, and I felt like I was just going for a ride in the park. In the end I was 3rd from last, but it was a total waste. When folks asked if I was racing Sunday, my only response was "fool me once." I need some serious interval work.
Yesterday I loaded up Elliot in the BOB for my first ever stroller run... with Molly too. It was intimidating the heck out of me so I just had to get out there and do it. It was... not so easy. With the stroller suddenly every crack in the sidewalk was an insult to my baby. The locked out front wheel was hard to aim straight forward and I kept zigzagging across the sidewalk for the first mile. And Molly's leash is barely long enough for me to hold at the stroller handle and have her run next to it, so if she saw something she'd take the stroller with her. At one point she had to pee and usually she'd just pull me to the side... this time she pulled the stroller a little with her and man, did she get yelled at. Luckily she left the squirrels alone. Either way, my first 3 mile dog/baby run is done. Hopefully it gets more natural.
One thing i noticed though, it's super easy to push forward and slouch into the stroller while running. I NEED to focus on running upright and just sort of tapping the stroller along with one hand instead of doing the two handed leaning stroller push.
Anyway, Elliot's going to be two months old on Saturday. What a little charmer. We went to a friend's house for dinner last night and he was a complete angel the whole time. If only he was like that at our own house...
